Pirelli Reintroduces Classic Porsche Sizes
About 70 percent of all Porsche models ever built are still in a roadworthy condition even today. In order to serve the need for suitable tyres, Porsche along with Pirelli has newly developed, tested and approved numerous tyres that were originally matched to different generations of Porsche vehicles. When it comes to the look and design of the tread, the redevelopments are equal to the historic originals. But under the skin, it is all about modern tyre technology. In total, there are 2 new tyre recommendations available for Porsche model ranges 356 B and C, Boxster (986). 911 (G Model, 964, 993 and 996) and 914 as well as for the transaxle cars: 924, 928, 944 and 968. All these new classic tyres are marked with the N certification on the tyre wall which designates them as tyres homologated by Porsche.
As Maurizio Boiocchi, Pirelli's General Manager Technology explains: "This means Pirelli researchers work hand in hand with engineers from Porsche in order to develop bespoke tyres for each model in the ranges mentioned above. These special tyres, engineered by Pirelli, meet the individual needs of every Porsche. They are custom designed for each model in order to showcase its performance characteristics."
The new tyres are not just simply new editions of the historic tyres. In fact they combine the appearance of the originals with modern tyre technology by using state-of-the-art compounds together with modern constructions.
The original tread design and tyre dimensions will help these historic sports cars to maintain an authentic appearance in every detail. Authenticity is a keyword of classic Porsches therefore keeping the correct look is important.
The material properties of the tyres allow for the best results in terms of traction and load absorption: the construction corresponds to the 2016 structure. Also the rubber compound contains today's latest tyre technology. These include the latest generation polymers.
One hallmark of the new tyres is excellent grip. Despite having perfect wet grip these tyres roll with very little noise - and meet all official EU tyre regulation criteria. Due to this contemporary approach, classic Porsche models with these new tyres demonstrate more balanced driving qualities than those with original tyres from former years, or those using tyres of matching size that are not tested and approved by Porsche.
Aside form the Pirelli CN36, the Pirelli P7 and Pirelli P Zero Rosso were also at Porsche's disposal. In 1994 the Pirellis P Zero Rosso was original equipment for the Porsche 993. Now this tyre is available in 11 current dimensions. The tyre approval includes 32 different tyre recommendations in total for Porsches dating from 1959 to 2005.
Porsche tyre tester Dieter Roscheisen summarizes the results of the sophisticated tyre test program: "When it comes to tyre approval for classic models we have now turned the corner into the present, with products offering particularly good, well-balanced driving qualities."
To optimize the product, Porsche tyre testers co-operated with the former World Rally Champion Walter Rohrl. The German has huge experience with historic Porsche models and was able to provide valuable input into fine-tuning the typical tyre handling. Rohrl outlines the advantage of the newly developed tyres: "In earlier years, the handling was not that complete and balanced. The new generation of tyres correspond to the way of driving a demanding sports car better than ever."
Not only road tyres were tested. Another innovation for driving on race tracks came with the semi slick P Zero Trofeo R. This tyre in sizes of 16 to 18 inches, also with bespoke 20-inch sizes.
All classic tyres developed and approved by Porsche are marked with Porsche's official seal of quality. This common sign for all homologations is "N" on the sidewall. If only decorates tyres that perform well during the testing procedure that takes place before homologation. To achieve this proof on European test tracks, the new tyres have to meet 33 criteria under stringent conditions.
