Ellerslie Intermarque Concours and Classic Car Show 2017 (Gallery)
On 12 February 2017, some 750 owners from 70-80 classic car clubs gathered at Ellerslie Race Course to show why their steeds were winners back in the day (and still are). The display theme for 2017 was “Classic Day at the Races”.
This year saw cars competing for best restoration trophies but also for the best unrestored everyday "survivor" award. Introduced in 2014, the "Survivor" class allows more classic car owners to compete for awards without the sometimes eye-watering cost and time associated with restoring a vehicle. The show also featured "future classics" - recent model cars already gaining classic status - such as some early Japanese models - as well as cars that date back over 100 years.
But in the end, the day is largely about nostalgia. Displays invariably evoke fond memories of cars from childhood, teen years and beyond. And most are presented in the way that people remember them, not necessarily as new.
